Chapters Council Legislative Report

Strategic, effective advocacy is central to ACRL’s mission and essential to the future of academic libraries. The ACRL Chapters Council Legislative Network Representative works with the ACRL Board, the ACRL Senior Strategist for Special Initiatives, and the ACRL Government Relations Committee to coordinate the ACRL legislative network and advance the ACRL legislative agenda.

The ACRL Government Relations Committee convened on Monday, November 4th to discuss current and emerging legislative issues of importance to academic libraries and to inform the development of the 2020 legislative agenda. The 2020 agenda will be finalized during the 2020 Midwinter Meeting.

The ACRL Government Relations Committee encourages ACRL members to advocate on the following legislative issues in 2019. As always, ACRL will continue to respond to unexpected challenges and opportunities as they arise and remains active in advocating for policy and legislation in collaboration with the ALA Public Policy and Advocacy Office. Please remember ALA and ACRL is available to consult, collaborate and offer assistance to library entities when federal legislation has issues at the state and local level. I welcome your questions and concerns as the ACRL Chapters Council Legislative Network Representative and encourage your review of the following resources to stay abreast of issues and trends of importance:

ACRL speaks out on higher education policy development, legislation, and best practices.
Build relationships with local community influencers and elected leaders.
Federal resources help you learn more about important issues.
